Refurb complete at St Peter's Oncology Unit
Stunning golden beaches and brightly-coloured tropical fish now adorn the walls of the Little Oaks Ward at St Peter’s Hospital, following the completion of a new oncology unit by Momentum children’s charity, kindly funded by The Wisley Foundation in partnership with The Lockwood Charitable Foundation.
Up to a hundred children each year are supported on Little Oaks Ward at St Peter’s throughout their cancer treatment and with ongoing care, some having to spend long periods of time on the ward receiving chemotherapy and undergoing gruelling tests.
The brand new children’s oncology unit now comprises four specific zones, creating a one-stop shop for all children’s oncology treatment.
- A stunning new Children’s Play Area complete with playhouse and new toys.
- A Teenage Chillout Zone with a TV & gaming area and comfy sofas.
- A Treatment Room encompassing a separate private examination cove including specialist oncology chairs.
- A calm and welcoming Professional Workstation/reception area.
Chair of the Wisley Foundation, Morgan Johnson, said: “It is extremely rewarding to see the final outcome of this imaginative project. What Momentum has achieved at St Peter's will make a significant difference to the lives of young people who need to attend the hospital. Together with The Lockwood Charitable Trust, we are delighted to have been able to support the charity’s work."
"The Wisley Foundation is wholly funded by the members of the Wisley Golf Club and works exclusively with local Surrey charities. We are delighted to be able to fund, in partnership with the Lockwood Charitable Foundation, this very imaginative and heart warming project."
St Peter’s Hospital Paediatric Oncology Nurse Specialist, Susan Snaith, said: “The transformation has created a professional modern day unit for our oncology children and families which is bright and inviting. The newly refurbished unit creates a calm and friendly atmosphere which is imperative to help relieve the stress and anxiety which families understandably feel at this difficult time when their children are in hospital. It is now a ’home from home’ environment for our children to enjoy whilst they have their treatment. We are incredibly grateful to Momentum and the Wisley Foundation for this incredible transformation.”
As part of its Family Support Programme Momentum currently provides emotional and practical support to dozens of families at St Peter’s Hospital and in the Chertsey area.
Flooring for Little Oaks Oncology Day Care Unit was kindly funded by Everyone Active through their contact with a local mum whose daughter received care at St Peter’s.
